Calculating the Effective RTP of Bonus Funds
A casino bonus can look generous while delivering a weaker return than playing without it. Wagering requirements, game weighting, maximum bets and expiry all change the outcome, so advertised game RTP is only the starting point.
For Australian players, calculate in Australian dollars and ask how much cash the promotion is expected to leave after the required turnover. The useful measure is that expected value as a percentage of the bonus, not the bonus headline alone.
Read the advertised RTP correctly
Game return to player (RTP) is the theoretical, long-run percentage returned over enough wagers to smooth out variance. A 96.5% game returns A$96.50 per A$100 staked on average, including the stake. It does not guarantee a session result or increase merely because the balance is labelled as a bonus.
With A$100 bonus cash and 20x wagering, full-weight qualifying turnover is A$2,000. At 96.5% RTP, expected returns are A$1,930 and expected hold is A$70. The bonus therefore leaves an expected A$30 before separate cashback, free-spin values or forfeited terms are considered.
Separate the bonus from the deposit
Let B be the bonus, T the actual turnover and r the RTP of the games played. For one consistently weighted game, expected cash remaining is B + T × r − T. Effective bonus RTP is (B + T × r − T) ÷ B × 100. The example gives (100 + 2,000 × 0.965 − 2,000) ÷ 100 = 30%.
If an A$100 deposit accompanies the bonus, establish whether 20x applies to bonus cash alone or to deposit plus bonus. The latter requires A$4,000 of qualifying turnover rather than A$2,000. Treat the result as the change against leaving the deposit untouched; adjust it if the deposit is forfeited or eligible games change.
Weight games before choosing where to wager
Game weighting changes the turnover needed. If blackjack counts 20% toward the requirement, A$10,000 in blackjack wagers generates A$2,000 of qualifying credit, while full-weight slots need A$2,000. Weighting does not alter the payout, but it alters the expected hold generated while meeting the target.
Compare expected loss per A$1 of qualifying credit: (1 − RTP) ÷ weight. A 96.5% slot at full weight produces 3.5 cents of expected loss per credited dollar; a 99.5% blackjack game at 20% produces 2.5 cents. For racing-market readers, the same denominator-first discipline appears when estimating horse-racing odds: a headline figure needs its staking rules.
| Measure | Example | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus cash | A$100 | Promotional starting funds |
| Qualifying turnover | A$2,000 | Credit earned toward wagering |
| Actual turnover | A$2,000 | Amount genuinely staked |
| Game RTP | 96.5% | Converts turnover into expected return |
| Effective bonus RTP | A$30 ÷ A$100 = 30% | Expected promotional value |
Apply maximum bets and deadlines before playing
A maximum bet changes the number of wagers needed, not the game’s RTP. Betting A$5 rather than A$10 may double the bets required to reach the same turnover. With identical games and total stakes, expected return is similar, but bankroll volatility and the chance of running out before completion are not.
Deadlines encourage rushed decisions, and exceeding a maximum bet can void the promotion. Confirm whether the cap applies per spin, hand, round or bonus, then check separate rules for deposits, free spins and cashback. Leave any condition that cannot be verified at zero bonus value.
Account for Australian conditions
Check that deposits, wagers and withdrawals remain in AUD; currency-conversion fees can reduce returns without changing the game maths. POLi is familiar to many Australian customers, while some operators offer PayID, but bonus eligibility and withdrawal treatment vary. Calculate using the currency shown in each transaction record.
The legal context also matters. The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 prohibits certain online gambling services, while state and territory rules add conditions. The Australian Communications and Media Authority warns about offshore operators targeting Australians. Players must be 18 or older, and familiar pub and club pokies in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and regional towns do not make an offshore bonus locally authorised.
Keep a clear bonus audit trail
Before depositing, copy the terms into notes and separate promotional funds from money you could keep without playing:
- bonus cash and attached free-spin value
- deposit, multiplier and the balance it applies to
- game weights, exclusions and maximum bet
- expiry, minimum deposit and withdrawal threshold
During and after play, reconcile the bonus with:
- bonus balance, cash balance and pending withdrawals
- actual turnover against qualifying turnover credited
- game results against the expected hold used
- cashback, approval steps and forfeited amounts
Turn the figures into a playing decision
Run the calculation with realistic RTPs, not only the best eligible game, then repeat it under lower weighting, a smaller bankroll and the actual maximum bet. A promotion has positive expected value only when the bonus exceeds the hold generated by the required play.
Before claiming, enter the bonus, deposit, turnover target, weighting, RTP and deadline into a spreadsheet. Save it with the offer terms and set a firm cash limit for the session; if the maths or operator status cannot be verified, leave the bonus unclaimed and keep the deposit protected.
